A chemist dozes by the fire and wakes with the shape of a molecule. A physiologist scribbles a note at three in the morning, cannot read it by daylight, and dreams the same thing again the next night. An inventor is chased by spear-wielding warriors and wakes with the answer to the sewing machine. These stories sound too neat to be true, and a few of the most famous ones are indeed more legend than record. But several are real, set down in the discoverers' own words, and together they show something the science of sleep now takes seriously: the dreaming brain is unusually good at connecting ideas the waking mind holds apart.

Several major scientific breakthroughs really did arrive in dreams. August Kekulé saw the ring shape of the benzene molecule, Otto Loewi dreamed the experiment that proved how nerve cells communicate and later won a Nobel Prize for it, and Elias Howe solved the sewing-machine needle in a nightmare. Not every famous "dream discovery" holds up to scrutiny, but the best-documented cases are genuine, and modern sleep research offers a plausible reason why.

1. August Kekulé and the benzene ring

In 1865 the German chemist August Kekulé was stuck on one of the hardest puzzles in chemistry: how six carbon atoms could arrange themselves in benzene. As he told the story years later, he was dozing by the fire when he saw atoms forming into chains that twisted and moved, until one chain seized its own tail like a snake and whirled in a circle. He woke with the answer: benzene's carbon atoms form a closed ring, not an open line. The ring structure became a foundation of organic chemistry. Historians still debate how literally to take his account, given that he told it twenty-five years after the fact, but Kekulé himself gave the dream the credit.

2. Otto Loewi and the frog's heart

This is the best-documented dream in the history of science, because Loewi wrote it down himself. In 1920 the pharmacologist Otto Loewi woke in the night with the design for an experiment, jotted it on a scrap of paper, and fell back asleep, only to find in the morning that he could not read his own handwriting. The next night the dream returned. This time he got up at three, went to his laboratory, and ran it: he stimulated the slowing nerve of one frog's heart, then took the fluid around that heart and applied it to a second, which slowed as though its own nerve had been touched. He had shown that nerves talk to one another through chemicals, not electricity alone. The work earned him the Nobel Prize in 1936.

3. Dmitri Mendeleev and the periodic table

The Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev spent years trying to organize the known chemical elements. According to an account from his friend the geologist Alexander Inostrantzev, Mendeleev, worn out, fell asleep and saw a table in which every element fell into place by its properties. He woke and wrote it down, and it needed only one correction. The periodic table is one of the pillars of modern chemistry. As with Kekulé, the dream detail comes from a later retelling rather than a note made at the time, so it belongs in the plausible-but-not-proven column.

4. Elias Howe and the sewing machine

The American inventor Elias Howe had built most of a working sewing machine but could not make the needle carry the thread. As the family story goes, he dreamed he had been captured by a tribe who threatened to kill him if he did not finish his machine, and as the warriors closed in he noticed that their spears had eye-shaped holes near the pointed tips. He woke with the answer: move the needle's eye from the blunt end down to the point. That one change made the lockstitch machine work, and it is still how sewing-machine needles are built today.

5. Srinivasa Ramanujan and the goddess's formulas

The self-taught Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan produced thousands of results that took other mathematicians decades to prove. He said many of them came to him in dreams, presented by his family goddess, Namagiri of Namakkal, who he believed wrote equations on his tongue. Whatever the source, the mathematics was real and astonishingly deep, and much of it is still studied today. Ramanujan's case is a reminder that a dream does not do the work for you. It arrives only after years of saturation in a subject, and it still has to be checked in the cold light of morning.
